Today I want to share a clip from one of my favorite Balanchine ballets, Concerto Barocco, with the lovely Diana Adams and Tanaquil Le Clercq. George Balanchine was the master of minimal neo-classical ballets that stripped away the fluffy tutus, complicated sets and large productions of classical three act ballets.
As a dancer who came up through the Balanchine tradition via the School of American Ballet and New York City Ballet, there is nothing that I cherish more! Balanchine’s stark leotard ballets like the Four Temperaments, Monumentum Movements and Stravinsky Violin Concerto let you concentrate and enjoy the beauty and simplicity of his genius choreography. These ballets are the epitome of less is more when it comes to ballet. With choreography and a score this gorgeous, what more does one really need?
This clip has particular significance as it is from NYCB’s first performance in 1948. Talk about history! I only wish we could have seen it live. Or better yet, been there onstage with these divine creatures!
With love and dreams of Bach & Balanchine xoxoMary Helen
